Zalo for business: what it is for, and when it earns a budget line

Vũ Kỳ AnhFounder, MWY Consulting

Short answer

Zalo is Vietnam's own messaging app, and for a business it is mainly a place to hold conversations and stay in contact with people who already know you: answering enquiries, sending order and appointment messages by phone number, and keeping customers when staff change. It is weak as a way to reach strangers. A verified business account needs a Vietnamese business registration or a trademark protected in Vietnam, so foreign brands often hold it through a distributor. Platform fees are small; the real cost is the people who answer.

A few birds perched on power lines against a white sky

A regional channel plan for Vietnam usually has a line for Zalo, next to Facebook, TikTok and YouTube. The line is often there because someone said "everyone in Vietnam uses Zalo", which is roughly true, and it is usually budgeted like the others, which is where the plan goes wrong.

Zalo is not another place to buy reach. For a business, it is mostly a place to talk to people who already know you. That job is valuable in Vietnam, where a large share of buying happens in conversation, but it is a different job from the one Facebook and TikTok do, and it is paid for mainly in people rather than in media.

This piece explains what Zalo is in terms a head office will recognise, which jobs it does well, the question of who holds the account for a foreign brand, what it costs under the packages Zalo introduced in June 2026, and when it earns a budget line.

What Zalo is, in terms head office will recognise

Zalo is a Vietnamese messaging app, owned by VNG. DataReportal's Digital 2026 report for Vietnam cites Zalo at 78.3 million monthly active users, a figure VNG publishes itself; in the same report it grew by under 1% over the year, while TikTok and Facebook grew faster. In practice, almost every Vietnamese adult with a smartphone has it, and many use it the way people elsewhere use their phone's contact list.

For a business, Zalo is several products under one name:

ProductWhat it doesClosest equivalent elsewhere
Zalo Official AccountA business account customers can message and follow; posts, chat tools, several staff on one accountA business messaging account
Template messages sent by phone numberOrder confirmations, appointment reminders, verification codes sent to customers who have given their numberTransactional SMS, inside a messaging app
Zalo advertisingPaid placements to reach people who do not yet follow the accountDisplay advertising inside a messaging platform
Mini apps and APIsBooking, loyalty or ordering flows inside Zalo, and connections to a company's own systemsMessaging-app mini programs

The first two are what most businesses actually use. The advertising exists, but it is rarely where Zalo earns its keep.

The four jobs Zalo does well, and the one it does badly

Zalo does four jobs better than any alternative in Vietnam:

  • Enquiries before a considered purchase. Customers ask questions, send photos, negotiate and confirm in chat. For furniture, appliances, vehicles, education, healthcare and many services, the conversation is where the sale is made.
  • Repeat contact with known customers. A message from a clinic, a shop or a supplier the customer already uses arrives where they look every day.
  • Messages by phone number. Template messages reach customers who gave their number in a transaction, even if they never followed the account — something a social page cannot do.
  • Continuity when staff change. An official account with several staff logins keeps the conversations with the company. The common alternative, salespeople serving customers from their personal Zalo, means customers leave with the salesperson.

The job Zalo does badly is the one channel plans most often assign to it: reaching people who have never heard of the brand. Zalo is used mainly for talking to people one already knows, and an official account starts with no followers. Reach is bought more efficiently on the platforms built to sell it.

Who holds the account: the question for a foreign brand

Anyone can create a Zalo official account, but the business features and paid packages apply to verified accounts. Zalo's verification guide asks for a business registration certificate, or for a trademark that has been granted protection in Vietnam together with documents proving the applicant owns or may use it. The legal representative confirms the application, it must be submitted within 14 days of creating the account, and review takes two to three working days, sometimes longer.

For a foreign brand without a Vietnamese entity, that usually means a distributor or local partner verifies the account. It works, but it places the account — and every follower, conversation and message template built on it — with the partner. It is the same issue a brand faces with marketplace stores and advertising accounts, and it deserves the same answer in writing:

  • the account is operated for the brand, under the brand's name;
  • the brand has administrator access, not just visibility;
  • followers, conversation history and templates transfer if the agreement ends.

How these ownership questions fit into the wider entry plan, and why they are easier to settle before launch than after, is part of the market entry cluster.

What it costs

From 1 June 2026, Zalo applies four packages to verified business accounts. Prices below are Zalo's published rates, including 10% VAT; the dollar figures are rounded at about 26,000 dong to the dollar.

BasicStandardGrowthComprehensive
Package priceFree1,000,000 dong a year (about $38)2,500,000 dong a year (about $96)6,000,000 dong a year (about $230)
Staff accounts3515100
Posts per monthNone15UnlimitedUnlimited
Messages outside the 48-hour window included each monthNoneNone5002,000
Chatbot and API connectionNoNoYesYes

On top of the package, messages sent more than 48 hours after the customer's last message cost 55 dong each once the allowance is used, and template messages sent by phone number cost 200 dong for most types, or 300 dong for verification, payment-request and voucher templates, before VAT. Connecting a CRM or booking system requires the Growth package or above.

These are small numbers for a company used to Western media costs. They are also not the cost that decides whether Zalo is worth doing. An account with a thousand conversations a month needs people who answer quickly, in Vietnamese, during the hours customers write, and who record what happened. That is where the budget goes.

When Zalo earns a budget line

How the business sellsWhat Zalo doesWorth it when
Considered purchase with consultation: appliances, furniture, vehicles, educationEnquiries, quotes, follow-up after the first contactOrders closed in chat can be recorded with their source
Services with appointments: clinics, beauty, trainingReminders by phone number, pre-visit questions, after-careMissed appointments fall and repeat visits rise
Consumer goods with repeat purchase, sold directOffers to past buyers, reorders, product questionsRepeat orders from account followers can be counted
B2B with long-term customersA shared support channel instead of staff's personal ZaloConversations survive staff changes
Sold mainly on marketplacesLittle: the marketplaces have their own chatThere is a reason to contact buyers outside the marketplace, such as warranty or setup

The last row is the common case for foreign consumer brands in their first year. For them Zalo is usually a second-year channel, added when there is a service reason to talk to customers directly, not a launch channel.

A worked example: what a staffed Zalo channel costs

The figures below are illustrative, invented for this example; package and message prices follow Zalo's published rates from June 2026.

A foreign home-appliance brand sells through a distributor, which verifies the Zalo account for the brand under a written agreement. The account handles pre-sale questions and sends installation reminders by phone number. Per month:

ItemBasisPer month
Growth package2,500,000 dong a year, divided by 12about 208,000 dong
Installation reminders by template900 messages at 200 dong, plus VATabout 198,000 dong
Follow-up messages beyond the included 500300 messages at 55 dong16,500 dong
Platform totalabout 423,000 dong, roughly $16
Two part-time advisers answering chat (assumed)Brand contribution to distributor16,000,000 dong, roughly $615

The platform costs less than a thirtieth of the people. The decision about Zalo is therefore a staffing decision: will two advisers answering product questions in Vietnamese sell enough appliances, and prevent enough failed installations, to pay for themselves? That can only be answered if every conversation is tagged with its source and its outcome.

Zalo advertising: when it is worth a test

Zalo also sells advertising, bought through its own self-service platform with Vietnamese-language documentation. It is tempting to treat it as the paid half of the Zalo line, but it answers a different question from the official account: whether Zalo can bring in people the brand has not met yet.

For most foreign brands, that question comes second. Advertising that sends people to an official account nobody is staffing, or to a conversation nobody answers within the hour, pays for contacts the business then loses. The order that works:

1. Staff and measure the official account first. Every conversation has a source and an outcome, and replies arrive within the hours customers write. 2. Test advertising in a bounded way: one province or city, one product line, a fixed budget and period, and a stopping rule written before it starts. 3. Judge it on orders, not on followers or messages. A cheap follower who never buys is not a cheap customer. 4. Compare it with the channel it would replace, on cost per new customer from the company's own records, not on each platform's report.

Where Zalo advertising tends to earn its place is local: businesses whose customers come from a defined area, such as clinics, schools or showrooms, and categories where the first step is a conversation rather than a click to a website. For a brand selling mainly on marketplaces, the money is usually better spent inside the marketplace, where the purchase happens.

Measuring whether it works

Zalo's own statistics show followers, messages and calls. None of them is revenue. To judge the channel, three things have to be built alongside it:

  • A source for every conversation: an ad, a QR code on packaging, a message after an order, a search in the app.
  • An outcome for every conversation: sold or not, value, recorded in the same place as other orders.
  • Repeat purchase by followers: do customers who follow the account buy again more often than those who do not?

With those in place, Zalo can be compared with other channels on the same basis. Without them, it tends to be judged either on follower counts or on anecdote. Building that link from conversation to order is covered in the measurement cluster.

Where the figures in this article come from

  • Zalo official account pricing on zalo.solutions, applying from 1 June 2026 to verified business accounts, prices including 10% VAT; the package comparison and FAQ on the same page for staff accounts, posts, the 48-hour message allowance, chatbot and API access, and the 55-dong message charge.
  • Template message pricing on the same site: 200 dong per message for most template types, 300 dong for verification, payment-request and voucher templates, before VAT.
  • Zalo official account verification guide on oa.zalo.me: documents accepted, the 14-day submission window and the two-to-three-day review.
  • DataReportal, Digital 2026: Vietnam: Zalo's 78.3 million monthly active users, as stated by VNG.

Platform prices change; the figures are correct as of publication. The staffing figures in the worked example are illustrative.

Where this work stops

MWY does not operate Zalo accounts, answer customer messages, build chatbots, or take commission from Zalo or any other platform.

Deciding whether Zalo belongs in the first-year channel plan, and who should hold the account, is part of Go-to-Market Strategy. Once it is running, tagging conversations to their source and outcome and reading each month what the channel returns against its cost is part of Vietnam Marketing Advisory & Oversight.

Common questions

Should we advertise on Zalo in Vietnam?

Usually not as a first channel for reaching new customers. Zalo earns its place once people are already in contact with you: enquiries before a considered purchase, appointment reminders, order updates, repeat purchases. If your category sells after a conversation or depends on customers coming back, build the Zalo official account and the people to staff it before spending on Zalo advertising.

Can a foreign company open a Zalo Official Account?

It can create one, but verification, which unlocks the business features and paid packages, requires either a business registered in Vietnam or a trademark protected in Vietnam together with proof of the right to use it. Foreign brands without a local entity usually verify through a distributor or partner, which means the partner holds the account unless an agreement says otherwise.

How much does a Zalo Official Account cost?

From 1 June 2026, verified business accounts get a free basic package, with three paid packages priced per year or per six months, up to a few million dong a year. Beyond the package, messages sent outside the 48-hour reply window above the included allowance, and template messages sent by phone number, are charged per message. The largest cost is staff time.

Is Zalo like WhatsApp Business?

In purpose, broadly: a messaging app where customers and businesses talk, with official business accounts, templated notifications and paid features. The difference for a foreign brand is that Zalo is Vietnamese and domestic, its business verification is tied to Vietnamese registration, and its advertising, packages and support run through Vietnamese entities and Vietnamese-language documentation.

Who should hold our Zalo account if we sell through a distributor?

If the distributor must verify it, write down in the distribution agreement that the account is operated for the brand, that the brand has administrator access, and that followers, conversation history and message templates transfer if the agreement ends. Without that clause, the customer relationships built in Zalo belong to whoever registered the account.
